Cost controlHow to calculate powder cost per serving
Price per kilogram is only one part of an ingredient decision. Compare quotations at the dosage that produces an acceptable finished drink or food.

Powder cost per serving = price per kilogram ÷ 1,000 × grams used per serving. Compare suppliers only after the dosage has produced an acceptable result in the same recipe.
Example calculation
If Powder A costs USD 20/kg and uses 4 g per serving, its powder cost is USD 0.08. If Powder B costs USD 16/kg but uses 6 g, its powder cost is USD 0.096. Powder B is cheaper per kilogram but costs more in the recipe.
| Option | Price per kg | Dose per serving | Powder cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Powder A | USD 20/kg | 4 g | USD 0.080 |
| Powder B | USD 16/kg | 6 g | USD 0.096 |
Add the costs outside the powder
- International freight and insurance.
- Import duty, tax and customs handling where applicable.
- Local delivery and storage.
- Packaging, relabelling or contract packing.
- Waste, rejected batches and production loss.
- Other recipe ingredients and processing.
Do not calculate before the sample passes
A low numerical cost has little value if the flavour, colour, texture or dissolution does not meet the product brief. Run the same recipe and preparation process for every sample, then calculate cost using the dose that passed.
Ask suppliers to quote on the same basis
Use the same quantity, pack size, destination and Incoterm when comparing quotations. Record quotation validity and currency. Separate the ingredient price from freight and any one-time packaging or testing cost.
Use the matcha sample scorecard or request a quotation.
